Copperslip and its downside! # Posted by Gary Sheriff on October 26, 2009, 2:40 pm Message modified by board administrator October 27, 2009, 11:11 am I don`t know what to make of this with regards to the use of copperslip and its opposition to alloys. For years I have used and taught others the benefits of using copperslip only to be told today that it reacts adversly with alloy! Basically if you have aluminium alloys and steels in close contact and you add a layer of copper this will react with saltwater to produce galvanic corrosion. Why people persist in using the stuff I don't know. There are plenty of better alternatives. BMW have sold sachets of the correct lube for years. The other problem is that when it is used on things like clutch splines it dries out leaving a copper powder residue. Most manufacturers have issued bulletins warning against it's use. Porsche issued one a few years back because mechanics were using it where the alloy wheels mate to steel hubs. For many applications, high melting point lithium based greases work best. Peter Greenow Hi All We use a ceramic grease supplied by Innotec Art No 03.0120 which is high pressure / temp proof & with its non metallic composition acts as an isolator between different metal joints. As with every good product it does carry a premium price but it works & with its pressurised can & built in brush applicator is very easy to use & not wasteful. Kent Industries do a very good ceramic grease spray 400ml or 200g tub. Mark McGrath we used to to have a mechanic next door to our workshop that used to blather copperslip on everything on cars battery terminals/wheels/rusty brake pipes/flexi hose ends etc ,when we asked him why his answer was it "looked good to customers" !!!  Post a Response ( * ) Required
