Posted by CALVIN OWENS on August 23, 2005, 3:51 am Sawdust Alley Records proudly announces the release of the remixed and re-mastered album True Blue by Calvin Owens & His Blues Orchestra, featuring guest appearances by B. B. King, Johnny Copeland, David “Fat Head” Newman, and many others. Since forming Sawdust Alley Productions and issuing the inaugural version of True Blue in 1992, musician and bandleader Calvin Owens has gone on to produce at least eight different CDs for the label. Each one highlights Owens’ distinctive trumpet playing with his big band and a cast of world-class guest artists. With this latest Sawdust Alley release, Owens revisits the disc that launched it all. Utilizing twenty-first century technology to enhance the sound quality of the originally recorded tracks, Owens re-sequences the whole package and also adds some new instrumentation and two never-previously-released bonus tracks. This new and improved version of True Blue offers seventy-six minutes of impeccably crafted music from Calvin Owens, a perennial winner of the “Most Outstanding Musician” Award from the Living Blues magazine Critics’ Poll. Drawing from a career in blues and jazz that dates back to the 1940s and the glory days of Houston’s Eldorado Ballroom, Owens plays trumpet and sings with the authority of a true veteran of stage and studio. But he also conveys the passion and intellect of a visionary artist who fuses the rich tradition from which he emerged with new musical ideas. Some of the highlights include Owens’ musical reunion with blues superstar B. B. King (for whom he first worked as an ace trumpet player during the 1950s and then, from 1978 till 1984, as musical director as well). King’s classy riffs and solos on guitar ring beautifully clear on three tracks. Other standout moments include the passionate vocalizing of blues artist Johnny Copeland on three songs and superb saxophone soloing by Texas-born jazzman David “Fat Head” Newman on two others. Along with tracks featuring female vocalists such as Trudy Lynn, Gloria Edwards, and B. J. Scott, the new True Blue stands as a testament to Owens’ brilliant capacity for musical collaboration. Of course, the fundamental power of this record lies in Owens’ masterful trumpet playing, and on numbers such as “Lick or Split,” “Texas Stomp,” and the robust title track, he demonstrates those impeccable chops for which he is most famous—the essence that makes True Blue the classic album that it truly is.
