The walk that you are looking for is probably the Pennine way. I believe that a pub in Kirk Yetholm, at the northern end of the walk, offers a free drink to those that complete the entire walk! The walk is long distance, from England to southern Scotland or vise versa and there is plenty of information about it on the web.
