This is a tricky one because everyone walks at a different pace and longer/steeper ascents require more energy. But, as guide, the number of calories an average person weighing 70 kilos can expect to burn off while walking on level ground at a ''brisk'' pace, ie 4mph, is roughly 90 calories per mile.
A strenuous day in the hills, where 10 miles are covered at reasonable pace, will see well in excess of 1000 cals burnt away!!
