The constituency of Texas 22 nd Congressional District is a hotly contested seat by the Republicans and Democrats alike. The region covers a south-central portion of the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area. It includes the cities of Rosenberg and La Marque as well as portions of Missouri City and Pearland, in Fort Bend, Harris, Galveston, and Brazoria counties. In the district, 52 percent of poll respondents identified themselves as Republicans, 32 percent as Democrats and 16 percent as independent. The incumbent representative of the district is the Democrat Nick Lampson. This seat was vacated by House Majority Leader Tom Delay in 2006. Before Lampson was sworn in, Republican Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, a dermatologist and former Houston City Councilwoman, won the special election and served as a member of congress for almost two months. Lampson is now running for re-election and is expected to face a tough race from a heavily Republican constituency that voted for George W. Bush over John Kerry by a 2 to 1 (66%-33%) margin, more than any other district that fell to the Democrats in 2006.
The district is dominated by Houston's heavily Republican western and southern suburbs, stretching from Sugar Land and Missouri City in the west and traveling eastward to portions of Pearland and Pasadena, all the way to the NASA Johnson Space Center, Clear Lake City, and Ellington Field. A recent poll indicates that 52 percent of district residents are Republicans. The district has a Cook Partisan Voting Index of 15 in favor of the Republicans. It takes in several wealthy and conservative suburbs south of Houston, including Sugar Land, Pasadena, Pearland, and the Clear Lake area of Houston. Texas 22nd Congressional District also includes the NASA Johnson Space Center and Ellington Field. Along with Sekula-Gibbs, several other Republicans are running for the seat including former Sugar Land mayor Dean Hrbacek, former Pasadena mayor John Manlove, former John Cornyn Chief of Staff Pete Olson, Family District Judge Jim Squier, State Representative Bob Talton, and NASA contractor Ryan Rowley.
