Dear Mary, I'm so very sorry to hear about your mom's illness. I take care of people in a nursing home who have dementia, and I think it's so hard for their families. A lot of the papers I wrote in school were about caregiver burden. Some of the nurses I worked with talk about opening up adult day care homes so that families can get a break to care for themselves. We all hate that nursing homes are more institutional, more bureaucracies than homes. That whole system needs a Florence Nightingale to reform it, and I hope to be part of it. (I'm actually a fairly new nurse: I got my ADN in 2008 in Maine, moved to Phila/NJ, where I got my first, and current job, and then got my BSN in 2010. I'm taking time off from school now, because I'm afraid of chemo brain making me flunk out, so I'm trying to teach myself advance-practice knitting. I think I read that you paint, is that right? What kind of things do you draw? [sorry to be nosy])
