Witney Wayfarers 6 - 1 Rover Oxford Academy

    28 Feb 09 Witney ATP 1530hrs

This Saturdays fixture was against the Rover Academy, who joined the league late to step in when Bicester 5 dropped out. As such, this was not a full league game, so when they arrived at Witney with only 9 players we found one of our 2nd team players to help out...

Academy was still a man down, even with Rob Dyer playing for Academy... and Wayfarers capitalised by playing good, neat hoceky. The ball moved around nicely, with lots of space to the sides, and Kaka Carroll was able to ping a beut in the corner of the net 5 minutes in. Once he started, he couldn't stop, his second looking very easy - but that was because he delivered well - and finished the half with a third.

Rob Dyer had to go at half time, and Nick Dunnington stepped in... Something we learnt to regret! Having already played earlier, I don't know where he got his energy! We started off with Vern Kay aereiling balls all over the place (even when he could have just as easily passed!). Nick August was finding lots of room on the right until he turned an ankle crossing a ball into the D. Very painful and out of the game - leaving us 10 a side. The resulting short was converted by Captain Ben but Academy then pushed forward for a period and had a few good goes at goal. This pressure was absorbed by the then 3 backs (Jake Crowley moved up to Right Half following Nicks absence) and Jon Watkins, but our own Nick Dunnington set up a quality effort for Academy to pull one back! We recovered some composure and Jake Crowley topped off an impressive performance by banging a great ball into the net from the edge of the D. Vern managed to lift a nice ball into the top of the net to finish off a convincing win 6 goals to 1.

TEAM: Jon Watkins (GK), Neil Boyes, Geoff Saul, Mike Roberts, Jake Crowley (1), Nick August (Injured), Tony Brown, Vern Kay (1), Ben Campion (1), James Bartrip, Ben 'KaKa' Carrol (3)

Man of Match: Jake Crowley (Great goal and endless effort)

Muppetry Award: Vern Kay (for all that aerial action!)
