This would appear to be because the UK's economic structure or model, so successful for so long, for so many (within the bounds of liberal imperial capitalism), is falling apart. This leads to society falling appart and the political system too. The Conservative Party, once solid as a rock, or millstone, is crumbling and is devided into three factions at each others throats. This leaves room for the Labour Party to step into gap as the new 'natural party of government' which means it supports the status quo and could become a truly Establishment party. But that's a dream, because the fundamental problems with the structure, the foundantion of the economy, aren't really... solvable anymore.
