It's interesting. I don't really know sh*t from shinola (Martyanov's quote) in terms of military matters, but it looks to me as though the shape of the aircraft (and the ships .. note) has changed in the last 20 odd years. For example F35:
Neither really do I, but I have kept an eye on that expensive white elephant for a while.
I think the shape changes you mention are due to the fact that the planes don't need to be inherently stable anymore as they effectively rely on computers rather than pilots to constantly monitor and adjust: just to keep the damn things in the air.
...the more complex the design of course just means all the more there is to break down.
