A National Evil"
Thank you for posting. I hadn't known the history of iodisation of salt in Switzerland. Goitre in Englnd used to be called Derbyshire neck, but any inland area of any landscape, can be iodine deficient, particularly mountainous areas. Really common in the mountainous areas of continents, away from the sea. The Chinese used to give seaweed preparation etc thousands of years ago. Iodine was used in India in the early 1800s, and earlier copied Chinese sea and animal thyroid products. The UK is one of the few countries with no compulsory iodisation regime, the deficit is made up by the fact that mid in the UK contains iodine, eg from disinfectants, etc. but it is possible this won't be sufficient in further. Of course, most publicly bought salt is iodised, but with the popularity of alternatives, this may again be an issue.
