Kirsty Wark goes for the jugular

Last night on Newnsnight Kirsty Wark interviewed Paul Scully, who was Minister for Postal Affairs 2020-2022. You might have thought a journalist -- a real one -- would have asked him why he did nothing to resolve the Post Office "Horizon" scandal while he was in charge. Did she? Surprise surprise, no she didn't. Instead she talked in general terms about the scandal and how earlier that day several MPs had raised questions in the House. Scully vigorously agreed with Wark that MPs were right to raise their concerns and that something had to be done to right the injustices and compensate the victims -- all as if he had had nothing whatsoever to do with it, even though he had been in charge for two years. What a golden opportunity for Wark to put him on the spot with a simple, devastating question: "Well, Mr Scully, if you knew at the time -- four years ago -- that something was amiss and people had been treated badly, why didn't you do something about it?" I waited with bated breath for her to ask the question. It never came. He was never asked. She just allowed him to burble on about what a shocking scandal it was and that he agreed with MPs that something ought to be done about it. Wark is retiring soon. It can't come a minute too soon. A disgrace as a so-called "journalist". A government arse-licker supreme. All those wasted years as corporate shill and testicle-sucker to power.
