Anyone coming into political office in the UK who thinks the UK economy and body politic are independent gets a rude awakening. What does Britain produce? What does it export? Where is the economic independence? It exports financial misery and weaponry: BAE is allowed large contracts only as a reward from the US who could easily nix them. The City of London could be broken in a few days as a financial center. The UK currency could be pressured to breaking point from outside.
The dominant UK print and online media are owned by US corporations.
Anyone coming into office COULD weather this if (a) they can get into office (Corbyn) (b) if there was political will from below to suffer short term and medium term for a long term future (Russia) (c) if dominant media narratives can be broken (TLN), (d) the class system can be broken. As you can see, it is a very tall order, and the UK society has not by any (economic) measure a revolutionary spark.
So the UK will sink slowly and almost undetectably into greater poverty, and the people will accept it, thinking it is somehow temporary, “if only we can get the tories out” or some such.
With economic independence and domestic production comes sovereignty. I honestly don’t see where that will come from - there is not even a spark of drive to slow down greater economic dependence.
Sorry to be pessimistic. There will be blips of euphoria on the way down, which should be celebrated.
