Peter Hitchens tells a funny story about Tony Blair Archived Message

Before Tony Blair (TB) became PM, Peter Hitchens (PH) ran into him at Oxford railway station. TB knew PH was a journalist and they acknowledged each other. PH was about to go over and speak to him when a crowd of young folk who didn't have English as their first language descended on TB. After a while they left and PH spoke to TB and the conversation went as follows: PH: Who were they? TB: Brazilians - adding, defensively, 'I'm very popular in Brazil' PH: Ah, best you learn Portuguese then. TB: Portuguese??? (said incredulously) It was obvious, said PH, that Blair thought they spoke Brazilian in Brazil. To be clear, this is privately educated, Oxbridge graduate Tony Blair. Hitchens always says of, as he calls him, 'The Blair Creature', 'he just isn't that bright'. He is, however, a 'show me the money' kinda guy. So with any pronouncement of Blair's, I think there's two things to bear in mind - who's pulling the strings and where's Blair's cut coming from?
