    ... is the interminable pretense.

As you quote: ""Everything we believe in is ultimately subordinated to our not wanting to clash with the US"

The whole charade is a display whose purpose is to pretend that England is an independent country with an independent legal system with its own due process involving well established fair rules and principles... but as above the entire show is a mockery because we all know the English legal system can't be allowed to come to a decision other than the one which the US wants.

On that point this itself appears to be mutable. As a celebrity Assange has become an increasingly hot potato. He can be juggled but does the US administration really want to commit to what will now be very negative attention of an actual "trial" in the US?: that paragon of such things as "Freedom" and "Democracy" might not come out well from it.
-Certainly they been quite happy for the UK as ankle-biting poodle to hold him in limbo for several years.

Whilst the UK pretends to observe legal rituals a man's life goes down the tubes, wasting away as the unwilling actor tortured in a farce.

-Anyone with any brains knows that for western "democracies" to even maintain a scrap of credibility on the matter of upholding liberty and freedom, Assange must be released.
