I think, as a group, or species, that human beings want and need to feel part of something... 'other' something that's bigger, stronger, better than we are ourselves. This can be, for example, regligion, or even science, mathematics, art.
This is because, (okay, it's a theory) that our lives are so small, so short, so transitory; that we want more, we need a 'point' to are existance that's outside our mortal coil.
The result is that we 'fall' willingly for 'big ideas' that appear to explain the world and existance for us.
The middle class, despite their superior eductions, are just as susceptible as anyone else, perhaps even more so because they think that their education and careers make them 'immune' to the propaganda, compared to the people who vote for Trump or support Farage. The middle class, so involved in language and moving signs around, could well be easier to fool, precisely because of this.
