I remember the 'Go slot' on televison, now a vague memory, decades ago, half a lifetime ago. It meant that on the BBC a hour, or was it a little more, every Sunday in the evening, a time was alloted to discussing moral questions of the day from a mostly Christian perspective, hosted by members of the clergy.

Many times voices of the 'younger generation' were invited onto the programme to give their perspectives.

One guest who seemed to be on the telly regularly in those far-off days, was John Lennon. Compared to the politicians, writers, journalists and clergy, Lennon looked and sounded like Jesus Christ had been resurected or reincarnated. His huge heart, love of the common man and massive hatred of war and violence, was palpable and riviting. He railed and chastised to the left and the right and seemed destined to attack the hypocrisy he saw virtually everywhere in society and the massive intrenched inequaltiy and lack of real, meaningful democracy.

Lennon was especially scathing about the British supported wars in Biafra/Nigeria, Northern Ireland and of course Vietnam, and he hated nuclear weapons as the work of Satan.

Now, the 'God slot' has gone, as has someone like John Lennon in his radical prime and pomp, Jesus the radical preacher slapping the hypocrisy of the world. Those times have also gone, forever. The doors have now been firmly closed and the clampdown is close to complete in the mainstream.

Sometimes I even think it was a dream, as the years pass.

If one remembers World in Action in its prime, today's current affairs programmes are little more than state propaganda, journalists as civil servants pretending to be journalists.
