I used to work with a (quite impoverished) elderly lady who I became friends with, whom after a year or two decided to take me into her confidence and confess to me her darkest family secret. She was it turns out apparently the actual niece of Ramsay McDonald: who could be said to be the UK's first "working class" Prime minister. On that shame, there's a well known story about McDonald: she knew it...I knew it: I don't know how extant nor indeed how apocryphal it is and when I asked her, neither did she, but it was about the first meeting between McDonald and George V. As it goes George apparently said to McDonald on his being confirmed as prime minister at the palace something on the lines of: "So...very nice to meet you Mr McDonald...though I did hear you were going to do away with me, the crown and the royal family...as now you are in power what are you actually going to do with me? To which McDonald replied: "Why, I shall be your loyal servant sir..." Apocryphal or not it is worth remembering as an illustration that "supine" has been a Labour party tradition from the very moment it took power, "Labour" has now effectively ended as it began: in ignominy and betrayal.
