I agree it's not realistic to expect the economies that profited from the slave trade to cough up without being compelled to in some way. I expect the judge will be disappointed to find that simply presenting it in legal/moral terms won't suffice because these things are determined by power and leverage, not what is right. That said, it's at least revealing to put a number on what was stolen for all those centuries, and the fact that it's manifestly impossible to repay it without ourselves becoming massively indebted to the victims' descendants is also telling. It shows that the luxuries and privileges that are enjoyed within the western enclaves, past & present, are impossible to sustain without massive exploitation of humans (not to mention nonhumans) outside of those enclaves, and that the whole project of imperialism and 'progress' is a non-starter if you do a full accounting of everything that gets destroyed in the process. Probably not what was on the judge's mind, but implied nonetheless. cheers, I
