I do not think the WCC is going to do a dramatic move like adding a bunch of non religious schools by merging conferences. I like that the WCC knows who they are and sticking to their model.
I know losing Gonzaga basketball would be a huge hit to prestige and NCAA tourney revenue for the remaining schools, but man I just don't see what any BW school except maybe Hawaii would add to the remaining WCC schools....
When Gonzaga leaves I would love to see the WCC and Big West merge into one big league. You have LMU and Pepperdine locally with Long Beach, Irvine, Fullerton and Riverside next you have ST Mary's, USF, Santa Clara and Pacific that are up North with Davis, Poly, Bakersfield and Santa Barbara then you have the two San Diego schools. I know this will never happen but it would be a fun league.
With BYU exiting the West Coast Conference, The Athletic's O'Neil wonders what that means for Gonzaga. O'Neil: "The conference holds maybe the only basketball coin in all of realignment ó Gonzaga. Except the Zags hold all of the cards. They are essentially both sides of the magnet, the team that can lure others to the WCC, or the team that can be pulled in another direction altogether. One side is good news for the WCC; the other catastrophic." WCC Commissioner Nevarez: "Am I sitting in the kitchen with a spoon in a tub of Ben & Jerryís? No. We donít need to panic. We have time. ... Iím sure there is no shortage of schools that would love to join us. But we have to ask ourselves, what are we looking for? We need to take the opportunity to pause, and take a deep breath, and figure it out." (link)
