New Mexico State would probably support this. MW would be weak, but not dead with 7 football schools and only 6 full members. NMSU would get the nod. Not great though, would have to find more members, and Conference USA/SunBelt are fairly stable, other Indy's Liberty/UMASS are too far east to join as full members. You could maybe do a Big East part 2 and have football and non football to solidify the other sports, but unlikely.
I think it's a nonstarter though, travel would be ridiculous for SDSU other rotational sports.
The San Diego Union-Tribune's Zeigler believes the best near term conference shakeup outcome for San Diego State is a handful of Mountain West schools (SDSU, UNLV, Boise State, Colorado State & Air Force) combine with a few from the AAC (SMU, Memphis, South Florida & Navy), plus North Texas & Army. Zeigler: "The geography works in football because teams all charter to games, and there’s little difference in time or expense to fly for another hour or so to Dallas instead of Albuquerque. In basketball and Olympic sports, you could focus schedules within your region and add one or two trips east or west — not ideal but not unreasonable." Zeigler closes by wondering if the mashup could generate a TV deal worth $10M per year per school. (link)
