Re: Florida Trip
yes many a night i was watching him also -- very good teacher
Oregon road trip for September 1984 game:
Sitting in a Eugene hotel room watching Dr. Gene Scott talk about the autumnal equinox
Actually I think Dr. Dan was my roommate in Michigan, not Oregon.
I was thinking of Dr. Dan.
Well Dansk I went there twice but I don't remember the roommate either time. Could it have been Dr. Dan?
Actually went there a 3rd time with my brother who lived in Washington at the time. We went to visit Robin (can't remember his last name) who had been one of our assts and was then an asst at Oregon and to tour the magnificent facilities provided by Phil Knight.
Thanks for the report, Beachbacker. But, I have to think that you had to be wistful about that Oregon trip, and the great roommate you had.
(For the rest of you, NO. It was not me.)
In all the years that I have been a follower/booster of Long Beach State athletics I have been to a lot of away games. But only with football did I actually go with the team. Been to such places as Clemson, Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, Wyoming, Michigan, and Oregon.
Never had I gone "with the team" for a basketball game or tournament until now. It was quit an experience.
I went with the team to almost every pregame practice, shoot-around, and "chalk" talk. As well as all the meals.
I saw bits of every team except George Washington.
As much as everyone snipes at the coaching staff I can tell you first hand that there is no lack of preparation.
As evidenced by the first game vs Missouri St. They were told all plays would flow through #44 and #10 would shoot the lights out. And that is exactly what happened. For the Murray St game the same held true with #0 and #1. We even out rebounded those teams but if you don't put the ball in the basket things don't turn out right. For the Wright St game we seemed to be much more relaxed and the results reflected that.
Coach used 3 different starting lineups and is apparently still experimenting as to who should be the ultimate starting five.
I have a enhanced respect for our SID Mr. Roger Kirk. I got to sit next to him at the scorers table and boy is he a busy guy. He is working both the scoring book and a computer at the same time. It takes multiple people to do that at home games. I manage to help him once, confirming who had gotten a rebound.
I had jet lag the whole time I was there. Leaving for airports at 0330 going and coming didn't help.
We bussed from Naples (west coast) to Ft. Lauderdale (east coast) and although it was dark I could tell there was NOTHING on either side of the highway west to east.
All things taken into consideration I enjoyed myself immensely and hope to go again.
Look for some exciting news re scheduling starting next season.
