Re: 3 bigs on roster
Dennis, Yan and Irish will never give us more than a few minutes a game and have not played more than that over the last few years. The lack of a serviceable 5 over many seasons has limited our men's hoops teams. That is about recruiting. I feel for Hampton because he is a 4 having to play the 5 just as many of our 4s have had to do in past years. Look at UCI and the fact that they have 2 or 3 bigs (5s) almost every year.
I do not agree. Yan was a known project when he came in, and I think that he has done as well or even better than the staff thought he would. I don't think that you can blame Irish's back problems on the coaching staff. When healthy, he has shown some positive upside. Very early in this season, I thought that he was about provide us with some meaningful minutes. Hawkins' injury is still somewhat of an unknown. Some say that he is about ready to play, and others say that he is not close. Watching him on the sidelines last night made me think that he has the size to help us if he could ever get into a position where he could play in a game. I wonder if they just might try to get him a little action in the next two games???
Our 3 bigs (true 5s) are Hawkins, Irish, and Yan. This is a terrible recruiting failure.
The stats were pretty close and the game was close. Went to the pre-game coach talk and we sort of did what coach said that we had to do. Overall it came down to a few rebounds, a few free throws, and them hitting an extra 3. The game unfolded exactly as coach said it would, but they outscored us!!!
I am still of the opinion that we need a big guy how can protect the middle better, get some additional rebounds, and score some points.
We start Hampton in the middle, and he is not bad, but not a true BIG. I would really like to see him at a forward and match with another big inside...
I drove 130 miles round trip to be at the game and root for our team. Not sorry that I did, as I enjoyed seeing friends, and I thought that we just might win it for a while. But... in the end, it was a long drive home. At least the traffic was not bad!!!
