Re: Rhodon. Transfers
I think Rhoden can develop into a good player, I have not seen evidence he could be a star. Mansel has developed into a good role player, he will never be a star on this level. I have not seen evidence enough to judge Neal at this point. He has been stuck behind very good players and has not had the chance to really show what he can do in game time. I assume if he was lighting it up in practice, he would have found more court time. Hawkins is one that coulda been a contender. But, was unfortunate to suffer a crushing injury All three seem like fine young men who have represented the university well. I wish them all good fortune in their next stop.
Recruiting for D1 basketball is an imperfect endeavor. Even the best Coaches cannot develop everyone. At our level, our Coaches have to take chances. I recall Seth Greenberg when he was here saying UCLA recruits prospects, we recruit suspects. In other words, the players we get are seldom going to be cannot miss guys. UCLA can find an athletic, tall kid who can shoot. We are pretty happy if we can do two out of the three.
Monson has earned some criticism here over the last several years. But, in general, he has recruited well. At times, he has struggled to keep those recruits on board. At times, he has recruited kids with the wrong mindset. At times, he has struggled to find guys that fit with each other. But, usually he finds guys that can play. I trust he will make really good use of the scholarships that have opened up. We really do need some interior help.
You are right 49erjr about these three players. Every player wants to start and be the star, like they were in high school. Many don't make the transition to Div I BB and therefore get little playing time. Thus, jump to the portal and hope that there is a school( most likely a Div II or weak low major) that needs them. There are very good players that enter the portal, but these three are not among them. I would move on too.
All those leaving were fringe players at best. I don't think Murray will be leaving as he is not close to NBA ready. Rhodon and Neal didn't do squat this year and Mansel is very replaceable, he played well in stretches but he has a long way to go to get better.
it looks like we might have a core five and now need a player or two that can replace those that have depart for other pastures -- we will be fighting for the top spot again next year with any luck at all ------------
I am starting to get concerned about the number of players that are attempting to transfer out. Most of them are leaving because they did not get any or much playing, so it makes it tough to tell how much we might be losing. In any event, we are going to need to pick a number of players who are as good or better than the players that we are losing! I am not sure if that is an easy or tough task!!!
RJ Rhodon is leaving LB. There have been a huge number of Big West players enter the portal.
