Re: Agree on keeping March Madness as it is
It will never happen. TBS and CBS know where the ratings come from and it is with the Cinderella teams upsetting the big boys. Ratings will tank if the tourney was 68 power 5 schools.
If it ever went to all at-large with no guaranteed conference champions, the P5 conferences would get a much higher % of the 68 slots. That would likely mean the BW and several other mid-major conferences would get no slots in the tourney. Keep it as is. I am glad that football will expand to 12 teams for a real tourney. I would actually prefer 8 teams for football with no byes for the top 4 teams.
In the latest installment of the Candid Coaches series, CBS’ Parish and Norlander ask 100 MBB coaches whether the NCAA Tournament should remain in its current form or change to a 68-team, all at-large format. A cool 97% believe the tournament should remain in its current form. Almost universally, quotes from coaches assert some form of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” with one commenting: “Our fan base doesn't give a s**t about UConn losing to Oklahoma in the first round. The run Saint Peter's made was historical. They love that. Loyola Chicago, they love those stories. That makes March Madness March Madness. If they change that, they better start paying the athletes a salary because you pretty much have farm league teams. College would turn into G League. And then what's next for mid-majors? A 'mid-major national championship?’” Norlander: “OK. Really hot topic here. Magma-like for some, based on my conversations. This is the greatest discrepancy in voting for any poll question in the 10-year history of our Candid Coaches series. I don't think you can get a 97% return from coaches on any other issue in this sport -- including whether or not they believe they're paid enough.”
