Re: Investment in D1 required
I see the 1% of D1 schools - which have unlimited $$$ to give to sports telling any school lower than them to leave and go play somewhere else. These are fighting words.
Another installment of the Candid Coaches series from CBS is out, and this time the focus is on the number of schools that should be playing DI hoops. Of the 100 MBB HCs and ACs polled, 53.7% indicated they believe DI should remain the same size, 26.3% believe it should be reduced by 15-20%, 12.6% believe it should be cut by around 40% and 7.4% say it should be reduced by 50% or more. One coach in favor of keeping it the same size explains: “Leave the current number of D-I teams alone, but mandate a baseline of investment into the sports they sponsor. This will force schools to make real decisions and not just be D-I in name only." One coach who advocates for reducing DI MBB by about 40% (roughly 150 teams) explains the rationale: “I love mid-major basketball. The good programs are really good, but the bottom of those leagues just aren't serious about basketball and it hurts the good mids come Selection Sunday
