UCD is good; I don't think they are only two dimensional its just that those two guards were hot and they rode it but maybe for too long. I felt we controlled the first half and UCD controlled the second half, except the last 3 minutes. We were only slightly better than Davis and the game up there to end the season could have major implications for tournament seeding.
Our defense was non existent for the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half, that has to be highlighted by the coaches in practice. Not like we had a 20 pt halftime lead it was a tight game. Our offense went stale or maybe Davis changed up their defense enough in the 2nd half and that needs to be addressed as well. The spacing wasn't quite right, the ball movement ok but we need to be able to have Tone and Tsohonis drive and dish or score more often to soften up the opponents defense.
The last 3 minutes of the game we owned that and that was a giant positive. This team has a lot of moxie when it needs it!
3 pt shooting even though horrid last night I feel its improving. Jones was 0-5 and I doubt he struggles long, it looks to me like his release is off so hope the coaches catch that and watch the film of when he was bombing away. AJ is showing he can make a few a game; Rote, he needs to be more consistent for us from 3. Hunter can make a big one now and then. Its a big weakness but I am hopeful for steady improvement.
FT shooting was great first half, bad second, but good again when it counted.
Defense was good overall except that stretch in the second half. We aren't great at half court D, but not so bad either. Room for improvement.
Tsohonis is an ice man, nerves of steel guy.
Pepper is the most physical guard I've seen in the BW in a while. He uses his big body to its utmost, almost to the point of being a bit dirty but if he gets away with it, why stop?
Our coaches were fired up especially Q and Caveness, but respectful when disagreeing. Les, red faced and angry, and his antics at the end were uncalled for. It wasn't even close enough to a foul to call it with the game on the line, they almost never do...what he did was way over the top.
Crowd was so-so for a 1 pm start, lots of kids (good) almost no students (bad) but the Dirtbags showed up to honor first ever coach John McConnell 1954-59 at halftime. I had to look him up but he seems to be a spry older guy great they honored him! We really could have used a strong student section in the 2nd half to fire us up.
And to her credit, Jane Conoley showed up and stayed for the game sitting behind the LB bench. I didn't see Elbee so that was good. Another one of our big donors showed up for the first time in a long time, was good to see him as well.
I also don't see us beating the UCIs and UCSBs this year, but if we can at least give them close games, and maybe pull off at least one upset at home, the team will be more confident if they get a game with either top team in the BWT.
GO BEACH!!!
