In 19 games, the Dirtbags have scored 124 runs, an average of 6.5 runs per game. The pitching has allowed 99 runs- an average of 5.2 runs. Since some of those runs are unearned, the ERA for the staff is 4.7. This is not as good as some of the heyday pitching staffs of the past. But, those teams didn't usually score 6.5 runs per game. Also, when looking at the weekend vs midweek pitching, things are a bit different. Our main weekend starters and their ERAs are:
Osman 1.91 (with a WHIP of .99)
Zeglin 3.54 (with a WHIP of .86)
Patton 5.79 (WHIP 1.86)
In other words, our Friday/Saturday guys have been very good, but the freshman Patton has really struggled on Sunday. From what I have read, he is thought to be hugely talented. I imagine that giving him some time to develop makes sense. An argument might be made that midweek might be a better time to develop him.
IN college ball, teams don't usually have a ton of depth beyond the weekend starters, and we are probably worse than average here. The team has struggled to find a solid starter for Sunday and midweek. But, they have also hit better than LB teams generally do. The San Diego sweep was a real disappointment. But, the season has been much better than that series was.
Personally, I don't get wrought up over a midweek win where we give up 6 runs. I think the series loss to SD was a much more disappointing situation. Previous Message
Is pitching the strong suit of this Coach? I know it was Weather's strong suit, I am less certain of Valenzuela. Previous Message
Getting swept by a bad San Diego team and nearly blowing an 8-1 lead doesn't have you concerned? The pitching staff which is supposed to be CDM Jr's strong suit is not very good right now. Previous Message
Time to panic, we didn't win by as many as some wanted. Previous Message
The Dirtbags opened up an 8-1 lead over Fresno State at Blair after 5 innings but our garbage pitching staff has allowed 4 in the 6th to cut the lead to 8-5 in the 6th. Valenzuela is turning out to be another CDM in that he is very overrated.
