LB dropped football. So that is one difference. SDSU has an advantage LB does not, but in a crowded marketplace don't you have to create a brand an atmosphere people want to be around?
With SC and UCLA leaving for the Big 10 (LMAO), perhaps L:B could create space as a SoCal school for West Coast teams?

However, what really has hurt LB is the following:

1. Branding! One of the STUPIDEST things ever done was the dropping of the 49ers brand. SDSU told the vocal mob to stuff it. Aztec for life. Long Beach State Beach Beach. I mean that is so ridiculous and a shark (ironically we ran off the real shark decades ago!). Be a shark? Elbee you and me? The branding SUCKS EGGS!

2. Flagship campus and yet promoting itself by starving the most visible aspect of the campus - athletics - by not charging money to allow programs to flourish. Charge 100 bucks a year or better yet $149 a year (Strike Gold campaign but of course see above - maybe fish for sharks is better?). The whole bottom of the CSU fees system too is another horrible message as well. I mean c'mon.

3. The MBB program is a stale. Monson is good in many ways but there is ZERO enthusiasm. Monson Maniacs? Ha. Those days passed a while ago.

4. FIX THE BRANDING! See #1

5. Make a campaign for the campus and treat the students like gold (hoops sorry - like baby sharks?) and create a community. It was working under Maxson, he left and we are left with this hot mess. It isn't all horrors but I guess President Janey found the National Treasure stye manual to restore "Mausoleum on the Hill" and felt it was better?

In short, create a coherent message, create a consistent and coherent brand and get to work. Harpoon the STUPID shark. Raise the fees another $84 damn dollars. I have ZERO sympathy for the snowflakes yelling they can't afford it when they all have the latest thousand dollar phones. Sometimes the adults have to do what is best and endure the tantrums.
