If Dan gave Hunter freedom to freelance then that was a big problem last year. Of course, losing Murray was huge so it can't be all on Hunter. It took Slater 5 years of college ball to have his POY breakout year. I do not buy into the spring/summer hype any longer as too many times the results have been not good. Maybe this will be a great year. I hope so.

For much of the last several years, we have spent the early part of the season working on defense. because everyone except the PGs returns, I am hoping that the defense comes together much more quickly, and we can focus more heavily in the early going on offense. I remember hearing from an interview of Colin Slater a few years ago about why he loved playing for Monson. It seems Monson is less highly controlling of his PGs and lets them freelance more than many Coaches, he also askes for input from them when designing plays in midgame. Not everyone likes this, Demetrius Mims apparently was super unhappy about it. But, to Slater, it allowed him to play more freely, since he became the BW POY, it was a very good fit. But, that kind of an attitude will allow the new guys the latitude to play to their own strengths, as long as the work hard on the defensive side in system. Previous Message
While these two point guards look like excellent upgrades on paper, it seems to take lead guards a while to figure out the offense we run. I expect both will struggle sometimes early on. But great to have both, they can be used more situationally at first. And I love that we have other experienced guards who can bring the ball up in half court and know the offense.
If Dan chooses to run a more defense to offense scheme like last year (when we had enough healthy guys) I think that would be smart to mask the learning curve somewhat on the set offense. And we have the depth. Stroud was vitally important in that scheme, Jones too, and Aboubacar.
What I like about both guards is they are dribble drive dominant. Messiah seems to know how to get into seams and he has to with his short stature, to be able to see where his offensive threats are rolling to best. And Silva seems to like to drive into the lane but these are only highlight reels so who knows. Good they can both shoot the 3 with some efficiency. Previous Message

Why would they just hand silva the keys when another guard like this is more proven with better numbers. Thompson looks like a real chance of playing big minutes Previous Message
Seeing these highlights make me think it is not automatic that Silva is going to start, looks like a couple guys with potential to start, I bet both are heavily in the rotation. Previous Message

Very quick but also looks strong and confident on his moves, like Slater did his Sr year. Very good handle and his 3 pt shot form in these clips at least looks nice. Great name, strong energy, I always love having these ballhawking short guards who are explosive and strong for their size, and to boot can shoot.
Will be nice for he and Silva to bring their A games to practice. Nice to have pg depth. Throw in that many guards on this team and Aboubacar can legit bring the ball up court and start the offense if need be, well, dang we have a pretty nice team on paper. Previous Message
