We have the ingredients to be really good, if we can get good play from the PGs and if we can stay healthy. The last two years have been a disaster from the injury standpoint.
2022-23: Murray was the preseason BW pick for POY, he hurt himself in October and his early play reflected he was no-where near 100%, eventually leading to him sitting out second half. Jones was a deadly shooter two years ago, and last year he had a couple injuries early, a shoulder and a foot injury (if I recall correctly), his couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat early last year, and he was not the defender he had been. And, Tsohonis spent the second half of the season hobbling up and down the court with an obvious limp, impacting his shooting.
2021:22- This was the year of the injured big man. We started the campaign off losing Ray Hawkins for the year, then we lost Trevor Irish for the year, mid year we lost Joe Hampton. At the end of the year Jordan Roberts was hurt off and on. We were saved by Aboubacar stepping up, but he was playing hurt in our NIT game and we had no one left inside. Our guard play was amazing, but we would probably have been in the NCAAs had we been able to keep another front court player or two available.
Everyone has to deal with injuries, they are part of the game. But, the last couple years we have had to deal with injuries concentrated on key roles. Two years ago the entire front court, and last year the guards, with emphasis on PGs.
Neither of the guys coming in appears to be on the same level of Joel Murray in terms of scoring. But, both appear to be potentially better in terms of distributing. I think we have plenty of guys who can score.
George was the best frosh I have seen at the Beach in years. most players have the biggest leaps from their freshmen to sophomore years. George will be a potential all BW player,
Lassina is a potential BW POY candidate,
Aboubacar seems to me to have the highest potential ceiling of any player in the BW, he has to improve shooting. He did so last year some, if he can develop an outside game, nobody in the BW will be able to contain him.
Depth is fantastic, when have we had better big guys than Stroud and Polynice available off the bench? Both should be much improved in their second year in D1.
When it appears that you will be choosing between Tsohonis and Jones at times for who will start at wing, there is really good depth.
Rotegaard was improved last season and gives us that shooter of the bench we need.
Freshmen Ngoyi and Lewis look like they can contribute. Hart is another freshman who should give us depth.
Even the walkons are good walkons. Monson won a game for us last season, and Yan has seen some minutes over his career and is a senior.
Please let us stay healthy this season, I am excited to see Monson finish his contract by taking us to the NCAAs. He is a good man and has had a good career, he deserves to go out on a great note.
