Long Beach State Athletics (the Beach) sponsors 19 varsity teams at the NCAA Division I level and is a founding member of the Big West Conference, with indoor track and field competing in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and men’s water polo competing in the Golden Coast Conference. Long Beach State Athletics aims to enrich the lives of Beach student-athletes through academic and athletic success and cultivate leaders and champions while embracing an inclusive and diverse environment for the Beach community.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Long Beach State Executive Athletics Director provides visionary leadership and is responsible for the administration and development of an ethical, competitive, and respected Division I intercollegiate athletic program. Under the direction of the University’s Chief Financial Officer, they must foster academic success, athletic excellence, and overall welfare of the student-athlete, while promoting a positive culture of equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging. They are dedicated to leading efforts in response to the university’s mission and strategic priorities. The Athletic Director represents Long Beach State University and the Department in a positive manner with a high degree of integrity and quality while ensuring compliance with the mission and policies of the university and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Big West Conference, and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide visionary leadership, strategic planning, and policy development while maintaining a program that is committed to the university’s mission and strategic priorities.
Administer the overall athletic budget and management of personnel, including coaches, administrators, and support staff.
Develop overall revenue opportunities and relationships with constituents on and off campus, including fundraising and prospect development.
Prioritize the measurable academic success of student-athletes, including their retention and graduation.
Ensure department-wide compliance with the rules and regulations for the NCAA, Big West Conference, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, and the university.
Interpret the outcomes of the 2022 NCAA Transformation Committee or related legislation and implement any changes required due to philosophical or programmatic shifts of the NCAA.
Provide leadership with sound decision-making with regard to all department matters. Assist in formulating policies and procedures at the conference level for governing athletic programs.
Take a leadership role in providing opportunities for women, promote diversity, and closely monitor compliance with Title IX and all appropriate rules.
Take an active role in BEACH 2030 and maintain a program that is committed to the university’s mission and strategic priorities.
Evaluate annually all athletic team programs, coaches, and staff to effectively plan short and long-term strategic goals.
Serve on committees and boards that further the mission of the department and university
Recruit, hire, supervise, evaluate, and develop coaches, and administrative staff within the Department of Athletics. Ensure that the Athletics Department has highly competent and diverse employees who are committed to not only winning, but to the welfare of student-athletes and to compliance with rules and regulations.
Take responsibility for the financial management of the Athletic Department and oversight of the administration of the budget to ensure that fiscal integrity is maintained.
Manage a culture of accountability for Head Coaches and Supervisors to manage their annual operating budgets and personnel budgets.
Responsible for the reconfiguring or restructuring of the Athletic Department so that it operates within 1% of its budget. After 2023 any deficits in budget will not be covered by the University but will be charged to the subsequent year’s budget.
Take a leadership role to ensure a positive and mutually beneficial relationship exists between the Athletics Department and student leadership and the student body at large.
Maximize visibility of the Athletic Department through effective public relations and media relations efforts and seek opportunities to strengthen relationships with local and regional media, and work to expand broadcasting of athletic events.
Work cooperatively with the Kinesiology/Physical Education Department on management of shared facilities.
Collaborate with the Director, Bickerstaff Academic Center to develop and implement appropriate strategies and policies to ensure that student-athletes make appropriate academic progress, earn degrees, and continually improve retention and graduation rates as well as cultivate an academic environment that emphasizes academic success, retention, and graduation.
Serve as liaison with athletic conference, regional, and national affiliation for athletics and engage in the governance and leadership of the Big West Conference and the NCAA.
This position serves as a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act and Executive Order 1107. Incumbent is required to promptly report allegations of Clery qualifying crimes that occur within a campus’ Clery geography.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred.
Equivalent to five years of progressively responsible experience in a senior athletic administration position required
Prior NCAA Division I collegiate or professional athletics preferred.
University staff and Management Personnel Plan (MPP) employees hired after January 1, 2022, are required to perform their CSU-related work within the State of California. All staff and MPP employment outside of the United States is expressly prohibited unless otherwise approved under this policy
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU

Experience in cultivation and stewardship of donors and in successful fundraising.
Visionary leader who can garner philanthropical support for programs and students.
Ability to communicate effectively. Develop and deliver multi-mode communications that support the unique needs of different audiences.
Ability to collaborate positively to effectively drive toward organizational goals.
Experience seeking and developing relationships that help grow and maintain a working and learning environment where every student, employee and community member is treated with dignity and respect.
Demonstrated ability to develop ongoing relationships with season ticket holders, members of the local community, and donors.
Knowledge and experience with athletics-related budget, finance and accounting and experience in presenting financial summaries to key stakeholders.
Ability to guide others in policy and procedures in support of the athletics department and the university.
Ability to consistently achieve results, even under tough circumstances and thrive in fast-paced, high pressure environments.
Strong customer service skills over the telephone, in person, and through written communication.
