"What can't happen is the program gets stale like with Monson for 17 years. There is NO WAY that Long Beach State can have 1 NCAA Tourney appearance in 17 years. Just not acceptable - hence the refresh." And this is what makes Andy Fee my least favorite person in LBSU sports history.
Thanks for the great insight - from a former LBSU MBB player perspective. And it reaffirms what so many of us collectively have said over the years.
The new AD understands all of this + the unique perspective from having seen SDSU build slowly over the years.
A key line that you have in there: This is the best job in the league and winning it at a 50% clip should be expected. We should want our HC to turn over because that means we are winning. This is a stepping stone job not a destination. Need to be honest with ourselves.
Agree that many would want this job. And with regard to being a stepping stone: to be honest, there are very few jobs that aren't. Most mid major jobs are, and Gonzaga is that exception. Either the program is friggin Duke with Coach K and Jim Boeheim over the years - ancient history (but that's getting more and more rare every single year), the program is a hot seat (even if coaches wanted to stay, they really could not, as expectations are insane - even the likes of UCLA), etc. So there's nothing wrong with any mid major being a stepping stone, as it's just a fact of life - for the majority of programs.
They call it a coaching carousel for a reason.

GO BEACH
While we never like to see someone get fired a change needed to happen and now the right coach needs to be hired to sustain long term success.
I remember coming on my visit in the summer of 94 and visiting with Seth and the late Dave O'brien and the vision was for Long Beach to become the UMASS of the West. It turned out that Gonzaga became that and more.
I think it's important to hire a coach that has worked extensively at the mid-major level with tremendous success in recruiting as well as winning consistently. I remember Wayne always complaining about what we didn't have that Syracuse had. No shit coach. The next hire needs to understand the grind. Seth grinded. You have to understand the landscape of CBB at the LM/MM level. If you have a player that is putting up big numbers you are going to have to fight your ass off to keep him. NIL is real. On the other hand you have to be able to recruit off the high major rosters of guys that aren't playing like they thought they would be.
1. Have to recruit local and develop locally. Makes it harder for local players to leave when close to family. 70% of the roster should be within 60 miles of campus.
2. 1/2 HM transfers like mentioned above.
3. Try and find an assistant with international contacts.

Here's to making a run in the conference tourney.
