….that the gun goes off when the coach is actually fired and it’s announced publicly. These coaches, even assistants looking to get head jobs, have representation. These firms that help “conduct the search” do this for lots of schools, they’re not sitting around 50 weeks a year waiting for the two weeks people actually “do a search”. CDM spent the last year, at best, coaching for his job and more likely, barring something extraordinary, as a lame duck. This doesn’t exactly go unnoticed. And when the school contracts with someone to help with the search, it’s most likely a formality, you’re largely paying for stuff they’ve already done, versus what they’re going to do. Maybe Smitheran’s relationship with SDSU is such he can pick up the phone and talk to the our new guy, maybe it wasn’t, it certainly not something he can do with any other guys who are currently employed. Agents and search firms? They can talk, and relay info, however they please, whenever they please, including to the AD. Unofficially, this search could have been going on for months.
