Hope he is considered.
I honestly am not worried about game coaching with Acker:
* He ran the offense at SDSU since he arrived and they immediately became a top national offense. And he was instrumental in player development/recruiting there.
I think Velasquez is a default guy there because he's homegrown (all SDSU) and is looked at as Dutcher's successor, but he ran defense - I wouldn't read too much into that on the surface level.
Someone posted this below, but:
“Chris Acker’s greatest quality is his intense desire to win. He is one of the best skill development coaches I’ve been associated with. I take great comfort that Chris has been a head coach at the junior college level. He has assisted in helping our offense to achieve national recognition. Chris has worked under great head coaches in Rick Croy, Eran Ganot and Leon Rice.” – San Diego State coach Brian Dutcher
“Even though Mike (Burns) ran the defense at Boise, Chris came to SDSU and really helped them offensively this past year. He is really well-known for his skill development, he’s very detailed and loves being on the floor working out guys. He’s a future head coach very soon.” – Mountain West assistant
* Ran defense at Boise State and they had a leading defense there.
* He was a head coach at JUCO level.
The level of involvement he's had at all the programs = no worries on game coaching.
Monson was a head coach for a while and many folks did not like the way he managed games.
Some college basketball writer mentioned guys like TOny Bland (rumor): would love to have great recruiters like that as well.
GO BEACH
Very impressive in his opening presser! One thing I'd really like to see is an assistant coach with a little more robust head coaching experience. It's the one thing on his resume that he's going to have to overcome at the outset, and the Big West does have some pretty decent "game" coaches, especially on the UC side, IMO. Also should be noted he was the #2 or 3 assistant for SD, Velasquez has kind of been the heir apparent there forever, so not sure how much "real life" mentoring Acker got from coach Dutch as far as handling in game adjustments, managing TO's, delegating to assistants, etc. Was hoping one of the local guys was going to ask. The 562 guys asked the obvious question about local recruiting, but the answer was about what you'd expect from anyone, thought you might get something a little more insightful asking about how he was going to put a staff together. All in all, great day for the beach!!!!!
