This year, roughly 45% of returning MBB players across D1 have entered the transfer portal. What this means relative to newly hired coaches is the time to rebuild a program is significantly shorter. In fact, an adept Coach can plumb the portal and have the potential to be good in year 1. Certainly, if he can retain his own recruits and add in via the portal every year, it will be clear if a Coach is going to be able to build a program in maybe 3 years instead of 5.
My thought is, does this change how long of a contract a school should be offering to a new Coach. Especially a school like LB who can neither afford a buyout or a five year stretch of futility. To be clear, whatever term Acker has been offered is non-negotiable, so I am not at this point second guessing his contract all, rather thinking about an issue in a general future manner.
