GCU played nearly flawless ball for 2 sets and the Beach was down but not out to an experienced, loaded Grand Canyon squad. Stretched each set to the limit coming back hard but couldn't get over. Bad serve receive and too many service errors. Trouble dealing with GCU's quick sets.
Set 3 even for a while then GCU made a mini run and it looked bleak. Beach block caught fire behind Torwie, I can't remember the exact plays but Harlan had come in for Godbold for better defense and passing, and a few key plays in set 3 launched the Beach and they never looked back.
GCU was hilarious, one of their stars Gianni freaking great player he was taunting the LB crowd on a big sideout we got, holding his hand to his ear like 'what is that?' then Torwie lights him up for two aces in a row! A yellow card was thrown at I think another player for arguing with the main judge about something, at first GCU looked confident like they'd swing it back around and sweep us but hell no we ground out that set and caught the momentum, drilled em pretty good in set 4 as Torwie went block beast mode and the serving and serve receive went championship level. Knipe bashing himself all over the place, a few dumbfounding sets offset by incredible hustle and timely quick sets, Varga was a monster, Sotos had a few struggles but really kicked it into gear sets 4 and 5, Briggs was steady great, McRaven went off with kills had 4 or 5 detonations.
GCU was freaking tough. Their setter absolutely bombed a broken play that mooned straight up no idea how he did that. Late set 4 Harlan got us a point serving then literally hit one into the stands, then GCU returned the favor on set point no less!
You could see the Beach onslaught took its toll on GCU in the 5th set, we got up 11-7 they shaved it to 11-9 then we cleaned up.
Time to wipe out UCLA and get another Natty!!! Crowd was freaking electric and was a huge factor you could see our guys getting pumped its exactly what they needed, on their own they can be too pedestrian they need something to fire em up!
