I love the dream of LBSU fielding a team that can compete and win against the big boys. Making the NCAA tourney and facing the best is just something I like to see. March madness only interests me in seeing the first couple of round upsets. If LBSU moves into a lesser division and does not compete with the best I will lose interest in following the teams. If LBSU was currently D2 and winning championships I would not be interested in following the teams.
I enjoy amateur level athletics and look forward to being in a division where our limited budget can compete more equally with other limited budgets.
I don't see simple college athletics surviving this. It will go to being regional/club type competitions without professional coaching/support staffs, and NIL/NCAA level.
I guess I'm biased because I was never part of the larger athletic realm that could seriously monetize a few sports and generate millions. I would venture all but 100 or so institutions can survive the coming changes to stay in what is now known as D1, and all but maybe 15 or so can fund their athletic department off their own revenues.
It's going to complicate fundraising as the IRS is casting doubt on athletes being a charitable class anymore, so the tax donation benefit could go away.
The key parts of the settlement include the NCAA paying for more than $2.7 billion in back damages over a decade, about $1.6 billion of which will be withheld from schools.
Big 12 presidents and chancellors voted virtually Tuesday afternoon to unanimously approve, with departing members Texas and Oklahoma abstaining. The 12 continuing members from this year's conference all voted to pass. The other four power conferences and the NCAA board of governors are expected to vote in the upcoming days. The settlement is widely expected to pass, which will chart a new course for college sports in establishing a framework for schools to share millions of dollars with their athletes in the future and create a fund of more than $2.7 billion to pay former athletes who were not allowed to sign name, image and likeness (NIL) deals.
