LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Athletics and Head Men's Golf Coach Rob Murray have agreed to a contract extension, linking Murray with the Beach through the end of the 2029 season.
"Rob Murray has instituted a championship culture as evidenced by back-to-back Big West Conference championships and this contract extension signifies our belief in the future of the men's golf program under his leadership," said Executive Director of Athletics, Bobby Smitheran. "Our men's golf student-athletes have done a great job of representing Long Beach State University on and off the course and that is a direct reflection of Rob and his desire to develop our student-athletes to be successful in all phases of their lives."
Taking over the program prior to the 2022-23 season, Murray has won Big West Coach of the Year in each of his two seasons at the helm. He led the Beach to a 7th place finish at the Chapel Hill Regional in 2023-24, the highest Regional in program history. That came on the heels of the departure of 2023 Big West Golfer of the Year Ian Gilligan, who Murray helped develop into an All-American prior to his departure to Florida via the transfer portal.
Long Beach State recorded two team wins for the 10th time in program history, and had a team scoring average of 283 led by a pair of first team All-Big West selections in Charlie Forster and Clay Seeber. In just two seasons, Murray has led LBSU to two of its 11 NCAA postseason appearances and two of the program's five team conference championship victories.
"I am incredibly grateful to Bobby Smitheran and President Conoley for their unwavering belief in me and the direction of the Long Beach State Men's Golf program," said Murray. "Their support means the world to me, and I am excited to continue building on our shared vision for the future. Together, we will strive to achieve even greater heights for our team and our university."
