The reason I donated to the NIL is I want to see a men's hoops team in the top 50 in the nation again before my time is up. If our fans don't help Acker and support his plans and the other BW schools do fund basketball, we will become a middle-of-the-pack BW program. I am not giving to the LB NIL to compete with the P-4 conferences as we will, under the present setup, never compete with those schools. I understand your position to give to the LB State Athletic Dept as your support helps all sports and is the traditional way that college athletics was funded. I said "was" because things have changed dramatically and sadly, it's not likely to go back any time soon.
Bottom line is the big schools have legal departments that can hold the NCAA to the fire, and they have. It has ruined amateur athletics that are affiliated with colleges.
The money is focused on two sports, football and mens basketball. If an athlete wants to market themselves for endorsements, that seems fine to me. And if a videogame gets made, the players should have an option to opt in for their likeness to be used. That is not what NIL is today. Today is simply is pay for play, boosters directly to athletes pockets.
College sports will devolve, most smaller programs will become JC's for the big, one or two years for kids who couldn't get to bigger programs.
Once the IRS says NIL collectives cannot be considered non-profit (which they shouldn't has they have no charitable aspect that is justifiable in the big picture) then we'll see what that does to donations directly to athletes via NIL.
The only way I have to fight this is to donate only to the department, not the NIL funds. I understand that doesn't support us maybe getting the top athletes, but I don't support just the athlete, I support the athlete who is representing Long Beach State.
Makes you wish for the days when envelopes were slid under dorm room doors with cash.
Unfortunately it has always been corrupt. Look at what the NCAA has allowed to happen at power conference schools. By contrast they come down on the non power conference schools for very minor infractions so they can show they are tough. They are a terrible organization.
