I agree. The cupboard isn't bare for Acker, he and staff did a good job bringing in some solid BW level guys. That said, I don't expect anything this year other than total team effort in non conference, and building team cohesion on both sides of the ball through the end of BW games. May the individual talents rise to the top however they do. I'm just giddy to be able to waltz into the Myd and see a whole new product, been a long time waiting!
One important note is that we are not in the same era that Turner started in. At that time, the number of transfers was a fraction of what it is today. This is a double edged sword, as without other schools being willing to pay significant NIL money and being forced to sit a year, many of our stars from last season would likely have returned. But, on the plus side, in the current environment, it is far easier to add talented players.
I am excited about what Acker brings, but it should not take 4 years to build a winning team in the transfer era. If it does, he may find it very hard to do so, as momentum is critical in the current competitive landscape.
Acker will likely play most of the roster to see which units work well together. It's basically a scrimmage against a low-level opponent. Word is the scrimmage against LMU last week showed us where we need to improve as they did well against us. Our first div1 games in OOC will let us see how good we can be. With so many new players and coaches the pundits pick us in the bottom half of the BW this year. Let's hope our new team can surprise the prognosticators and finish in the top half of the BW. Most LB fans wanted a new direction and a new coach. We have what we wanted so let's support our team and coaches. Building a winner usually takes a new coaching staff a few years. At UCI Turner was 13-19 and 6-10 in the BW in his first year, and his second year was 12 and 20 and 6-10. In his 3rd year at UCI he was 21-16 and 11-7 in the BW and went to CIT tourney.
The Chris Acker era starts Monday night with an exibition game against the SCIAC power Cal Tech. I am sure the coaching staff will be watching the Cal Poly - Cal Tech game on Friday night to determine weakness in Monday night's opponent. Just kidding. It will be fun to see our new team and new coach on the floor on Monday. It will be a chance to see how well the new group will play together and where they will go for scoring. Looking foward to the season tipoff.
