My biggest issues with JCC are not athletics. As noted by BeachShark, academics is suffering. Our two prior Presidents (Alexander and Maxson) had put LB on the path to being one of the top academic CSUs. The President's scholar's program was bringing great students here, and our campus has long had a waiting list and has been one of the most applied to Universities in the Nation. Instead of building on this, the emphasis was shifted to "breaking Barriers", and to diversity. Nothing wrong with diversity, but we were already one of the most diverse Universities in the country. High standards were tossed out as they were considered something of a barrier. Instead of aspiring to be the best of the system like say SDSU, we shifted to wanting to let everyone in. Our model CSU became Dominguez Hills instead of SDSU.
At the same time, she promised to end our branding nightmare and make us LBSU, but caved to the faculty at the first hint of opposition. We have discussed ad infinitum the harm to alumni relations the ridiculous charge that the 49ers brand was somehow racist, and the basic dismantling of the alumni association, not to mention the end of events that brought alums back to campus like homecoming.
When she was hired, I recall going to her first Convocation, I was excited to hear her vision for the University. I was shocked at how unprepared she was for her first major speaking opportunity on campus, and at that time was very concerned for our school. Unfortunately, that introductions to her was a harbinger of the poor leadership of her tenure.
