MTE = Mullti Team Events aka tournaments.
ig West Commissioner/Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee Chair Dan Butterly sits down with Connect’s Bryan Fischer at the NCAA Convention to discuss what the committee’s talking about, the membership’s approach to scheduling, tournament expansion, conference realignment and NIL. Butterfly says the scheduling component was the biggest topic the committee discussed and explains: “MTEs have always been a very important part of college basketball. When you say Feast Week, people understand what Feast Week is. It’s the Thanksgiving time period when everybody is playing in an MTE. We're finding 97% or more of men's basketball teams are playing in some type of MTE, and how important those are for mid-major and small-major programs to get a neutral site opportunity, a tournament-type opportunity against a major program. Those are important parts of college basketball and trying to determine what the future is relative to MTEs, knowing that there's the Players Era events and some of these things that are coming out in the NIL space that we need to continue to look to protect the game of college basketball moving forward.” Butterfly also notes that Big West institutions are all focused on opting into the House settlement, adding: “We’re not necessarily in a position that we have the revenue to be able to outlay [massive revenue-sharing], but we do have a number of NIL opportunities along the California coastline and Hawaii right now.”
