I don't think the Big East model will work, but there just aren't enough teams out west. Maybe they are desperate for an LA area media entity, but don't want to have LMU/Pepp/UCI/LB etc as a member, so this socal tournament can fill a few weekends of media property in the area. Previous Message
I am surprised nobody commented on this post. Let me say the Pac12 OR & WA State football conference fumbled the ball by not adding more football schools. Then the merged with the WCC for all other sports, which is not working out for them, especially with Gonzaga going down the tubes. The WCC alignment with no football schools runs counter to what the OR-WA school’s direction.
If they run tournaments with BWC schools, it further moves them away from a football conference. The two remaining PAC schools should be bolder with their member additions to mitigate expenses or bite the bullet look to another conference, Big 12? The idea of in season tournaments with West Coast teams has merit and could allow long term growth.
If they go ahead with this IST approach, and the BWC is in consideration, then the BwC should jump on it Previous Message
Reddit thread, maybe they have a scheduling agreement developing for content:
Canzano interviewed Stu Jackson at WCC media days in October and Stu said that the WCC was working on a future partnership with another sports conference for scheduling partnerships and in season tournaments
A couple days later Canzano dropped this -
"Octagon isn’t just working for the Pac-12, it’s double dipping for the WCC. Octagon is the strategic agency and media-rights consultant for Commissioner Stu Jackson’s conference, per sources. I find that synergy interesting."
Canzano then had Stu Jackson on his radio show later in October and Jackson said they were working with more than one west coast conference to schedule in season tournaments with, the second candidate likely being the Big West.
Jackson painted a grand plan of in season, inter-conference basketball, soccer, baseball, and volleyball tournaments that could be cheaply produced and sold to benefit all participants. I only watch football, but I thought its sounded like a good plan, especially since Pac-12 Enterprises can produce them. Previous Message
