I am told only professors (but not lecturers) are eligible for FERP. This is of particular interest to me since I am a lecturer. Previous Message
Stop being stupid. The CSU does not offer it on an on-going basis. They offered it during a budget crisis that required layoffs—exactly the same scenario we are facing now. The CSU authorized it because it gets high paid employees to retire and onto the PERs payroll. When the budget reckoning comes, they are just as likely to authorize it again because it reduces the budget.
The FERP program is a contractually negotiated program that has been in the faculty collective bargaining agreement since the 1980’s when collective bargaining began. There is no such provision for staff and never will be. Previous Message
There is no such thing I have been told by HR. Please stop assuming things are the same as 30 years ago. They told me there would be 'no free money.' Please stop passing around false info. Previous Message
PERS does have a provision available to staff, which provides two years additional service credit for certain individuals in certain circumstances (like layoff). It’s commonly referred to as the Golden Handshake. The last time I recall it being used was in the fiscal crisis in the very early 90’s. Previous Message
FERP is only for faculty and has existed forever. It does not apply to Staff. Please get all the facts to be accurate. There is no early retirement program for staff. Previous Message
Sorry to jump in on this, but when you read the article in the Current, there is a tab about Chris Lowe of the Shark Lab and his retirement. In addition to information on Chris and his decision, the article touches on the early retirement program that faculty and staff are taking in anticipation of the further budget cuts coming.
