From memory, and its awhile back, I think King Alexander's office used to cover close to $4 million a year from his discretionary budget.  Previous MessageQ1 - 2024-2025 AY - the CSULB had a 3% budget reduction, we lost 49.7% of our departmental budget, now a 7.95% budget cut is looming for 2025-2026 AY. I heard the athletic department is having budgetary challenges, and someone mentioned 'in the million's", but I have knowledge, but I believe there is truth to those numbers. Q2 - I believe I heard in October/November that athletics was in the red. All departments will be severely shaken by the next budget decrease. Question one: Is the athletic department currently running at a deficit, and if so how much and how do you know this? Question two: based on what you have personally heard, while putting the effects of potential/contemplated cuts to federal financial assistance to the Cal State system aside, will the expected state budget cuts to the school impact the athletic program, and to what degree? Just got thinking about it based on what people were saying about admissions, seems pretty low which is good. Of note with the DEI spending and rhetoric, ~72% of our admissions are Hispanic/Latino, Asian, or African American. I thought well of the school decades ago and recent graduates tell me they still feel that they got a good education. Thinking about what 2001 grad wrote how the admissions values “… home address geography first.” Years ago, I was talking to a friend about how Long Beach State University would be a better name for the school. Everything was fine until I said that it would make the school more nationally prestigious. Boy, did I hit a nerve. My friend did not want LBSU to be nationally prestigious, her main concern, perhaps only concern, was that there was a local university for her children to attend. I do not know how much her concern was cost, or that she wanted her children to stay close to home, but she did not want her children competing with other high school graduates from across the country to get into LBSU. Wokeism in it's flesh: My daughter found out today that she's been waitlisted at Long Beach for next year. Here are some stats. Over a 4.0 GPA at a challenging high school. She got a 5 on her AP English exam. Lots of extra-curriculars. Not that it matters, but probably 20 family members went to LBSU. Can you imagine how many "less qualified" applicants got in ahead of her? Her crime: marking "white" on her application. |
