The way I see it is: We only had 3 experienced Div 1 players in Askew, Wainright, and Johnson. Denson was to be the SF but he fell off the roster and did not contribute much and who knows what happened to Lloyd??. DMX has potential and did improve this season. Nagy also has potential but needs to hit the weights and bulk up. Kam Martin did well early on but once opponents figured out our predictable offense, he had a hard time scoring. Richardson needs to bulk up and get stronger. I see him as a back-up post. Beyond those players, I think we need to hit the portal hard for 3 or 4 Div 1 level players. The incoming freshmen look very good, but freshmen usually take a year to acclimate to div1 speed and defenses. True, we were close in many games this year, and it would have been nice to win 5 or 6 more games. Is Acker the guy to lead our program? I will give him a lukewarm pass this year as he was hired late and had little time to recruit. I hope at least we can beat Poly in our last game, but Poly hammered Bakersfield, and they need a win to try for the 8th seed. Long Beach and Fullerton miss the tourney. Good grief! ![]() Some really good teams this year in the BWC. UCSB was supposed to be a top team and they were pushed to mid level by CSUN and UCR. UCI and UCSD are mid major powers this year. I've been harsh on what I've seen on the court when the team gives up and goes solo and Acker just barks at everyone. What I've seen lately is better. And, I'm giving Acker 3 years to figure it out. If he hasn't by the end of 3 years, then I'll believe he never will. We have no clue who will bail out this offseason. But looking at player quality and chances for development, I'd let these guys know to portal outta here: Lewis, Hart, Eli, Curtis I think Askew will be gone if he really has that one more year, his stats earned him a NIL payday and he's perfect for a higher level team that needs a solid one year pg rental. Graduating: Johnson, Denson Gone: Lloyd This leaves: BIGS: DMX, Nagy, Richardson . Adding: Dallas Washington , 6-9. Needs: 1 experienced physical big over 6-7. WINGS: None. Lloyd and Denson are the only true wings we have, although DMX can kind of play that position. Needs: 2 experienced wings, 6-6 to 6-10, at least one who can bury 3's and one that plays tough d or combo of both GUARDS: Wainwright, Kam, Grant Martin (if he walks on). Adding: Gavin Sykes , PG. Needs: 1 experienced PG, 2 physical shooter / defenders If this is how it went, we'd have 6 guys on scholarship, one walk on. Its 13 schollies we can give, right? So 7 more schollies to give: 1 more experienced big, 2 experienced wings, 1 experienced pg, 2 experienced SG...experience needed all around. Grab one more HS player or a portal xfer for development. Assume everyone signed in for next year is the type of player the coaches are looking for. So next year would be a good indicator can Acker bring in a handful of new guys and blend them with existing guys (all of the type of player for their system) and be successful? Minimum of a .500 season in the BWC or better needed. I won't go beyond one year because NIL will steal any stars that develop each year. So Acker and friends have to become very good to ID the type that fits their system and be good at blending them in quickly. enough of my rambling ![]() Problem is I do t trust him as an evaluator, definitely don’t trust him to use guys to the best of their ability or set up a system that optimizes the roster. LOTS of holes to fill and I’m confused why anyone of decent skill would look at a guy who missed the Big Worst tournament and think, yeah let me go there. How about trying to bring it guys that compliment each other vs. getting talent and hoping one or two guys can carry the load ![]() NEXT YEAR Next years team is looking good if we can get all of them onto campus. Then fill holes from the portal. We will have a different team. Acker needs to keep learning to be a head coach. Four more years. ![]() GTFO. You’re in over your head and it shows. ZERO and I mean ZERO cohesion or semblance of an identity on either end of the floor. Some guys are born and bread to be assistants at this level and right now feeding anyone a line of “you’re excited” should show you can’t read the room. I’m nearly out. There’s losing and showing promise/competence and merely lacking talent or first year woes. And then there’s this display. ![]() From OC Register "Devin Askew was a bright spot for Long Beach Saturday just as he has been all season. He had a game-high 25 points and was 5-of-10 from 3-point range. It was the eleventh time this season Askew scored over 20 points and the second time he made five 3-pointers. “I just love the fact that he’s figuring out how to play amidst the double teams and he’s also finding ways to get others involved,” Long Beach State coach Chris Acker said of Askew. “The fact that he’s still facilitating and getting others involved is the most impressive thing.” Acker’s is wrapping up his first season as the head coach at Long Beach after being an assistant at San Diego State the last five seasons. LBSU has struggled mightily this season, but the team has been competitive in losses this season. Long Beach has lost four of its last nine games by two points or fewer and has had three overtime losses during its losing streak." “I’m excited about what we are building and what we are establishing,” Acker said. “If we can be in one or two point games, I know that we have a chance to win these games if we get more reps under our belt and get more comfortable with what we are trying to do.” ![]() From the OC Register. "UCI remains one game behind UC San Diego (26-4, 16-2) atop the Big West standings with two games remaining for both teams. The Anteaters are two games ahead of third place Cal State Northridge (21-8, 13-5) but own the tiebreaker over CSUN. Long Beach (7-23, 3-15) was coming off a crushing buzzer-beater loss in overtime to Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday and has lost 13 consecutive games. LBSU will not qualify for the eight-team conference tournament and will be absent from the event for the first time since 2004. Long Beach won the tournament last season and is the first team to win the tournament and fail to qualify for the event the following season." |
