Dr Wood did an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit I think he was using talk to text, and some strange words here and there. Nice to see a university president open up in this format.
I know some of you don't care to hear anything about Sac State, but I find it interesting, and frankly they might be a new member sooner rather than later with UVU now looking more at the Summit/Mountain West. Sorry for being a bit long on this one:
Some athletics highlights:
Pac-12: We had talks with them for sure as well as real conversations with nearly every reasonable conference within our region. So, yes, we have. They have not shown some interest but not great interest. i think not was not supposed to be there
Regarding athletic facilities: "... is the fact that our stadium is beyond end of life. So to be clear, if we weren’t building a stadium, we would have to shut down our football team."
To me says they are closer to shutting down football than anyone thought.
Olympic sports: We have several that are interested in us. I can’t say right now, because that would take away our bargaining position. But you will know the answer to that question before the end of the semester.
Dilusional, but shooting his shot: Big12 is the stretch goal. But there are many great conferences out there. That said, I really like the idea of us being independent with a scheduling agreement. Notre Dame is independent and has a scheduling agreement with the ACC
Adding sports: I would say it is not just a likelihood, but a guarantee that you will see an NCAA wrestling program at Sac State in the near future.
Sac State has MMA program currently, goes by moniker combatU, direct involvement with Uriah Faber's team in Sac.
Regarding university budget cycles: Part of why we’re focusing on athletics right now, is that we can generate more revenue so that we can reduce costs Particularly in academic affairs. In fact, we made a public commitment that 15% of all new revenue generated from football and men’s and women’s basketball will be redirected back to support the academic side of Sacramento State. So I’m trying to create opportunities to generate revenue, rather than the approach of cutting, cutting, and cutting some more. we will never be able to cut our way to success.
He's selling this even if no one's buying
Campus life: In several years from now you’ll see 5 to 8000 students living on campus. It will help to create an even better student life, but will increase graduation rates and reduce issues with basic needs.
Revive area: We are looking at this, but not through a partnership with the city, but through a partnership with private investors, who may want to help develop that area
Big Sky deal: Right now, for all of our athletic teams, for all of our 21 sports, we only bring in $100,000 in media rights. That’s simply embarrassing.
