They swung for the fences, and reached on a swinging bunt.
They generated genuine excitement, that faded as their football team fell apart last year after becoming an unlikely playoff contender. They nailed their football hire. Still are not FBS, will have to leave the Big Sky, and planted their Olympic sports in a conference that is more aligned with them anyways.
To keep the analogy going, they still could get thrown out at second, or hit into an inning ending double play. But everyone knows they want to be more than they are currently, and the admins are fighting for it. They screwed up by being Pac-12 or bust in my opinion, and Davis seized that opportunity of having first right to elevate to FBS Mountain West football from the Sacramento area with their other sports making the move already.
But social media is talking about them in regards to their marquee sports. So, a swinging bunt single.

Sac State is trying to be at the P4 level in football but I think they are many years away from that goal. They do have plans to build a new FB stadium, so at least they are improving their facilities. With UCD and Hawaii leaving, we needed to add Sac State, Utah Valley, and CBU to ensure that the BW remains a viable conference. I like having 12 schools in the BW as it gives LB 11 BW home hoops games. Previous Message
Extra Points publisher Matt Brown subsequently reports that “industry sources tell me Sacramento State is expected to announce tomorrow that they are withdrawing from the Big Sky and joining the Big West in everything but [football], effective July 1, 2026. And if they can't join FBS, I'm told their short-term plan is FCS Independent. My own thoughts: I was curious if Sac State would pull this move next. I know them joining the Big West has been in the works for the Olympic sports. And Sac State could put together an independent football schedule in 2026 and beyond, even as an FCS member, with a combo of FCS opponents and FBS opponents. Departing the Big Sky after pretty much publicly saying, ‘We'll be breaking up with you soon’ probably makes some sense even if it's not the exact way Sac State intended with its FBS independent hopes hitting a roadblock by the FBS Oversight Committee. I also hear the school is very unlikely to get the waiver approved by the DI Council next week.”
