From the Trustee's upcoming agenda:
5. The schematic plans for the California State University, Long Beach University
Student Union Renovation and Expansion project are approved at a project
cost of $294,507,000 at CCCI 9994.
That's right, a quarter BILLION plus.
From reading the docs regarding the renovation, most of it seems like changing the flow, adding some more open study areas, and reorganizing the dining options. A lot of money to achieve that goal. I know construction of this size is expensive, but I just don't see that price tag necessary unless the building was crumbling (which it wasn't).
I don't think I can be convinced it is worth that amount, and that an extra $50million couldn't be found to redo the Pyramid roof (Pyramid shape or not).
Also, interestingly CSULB has not followed through with giving inventory of it's Native American artifacts. With Puvungua undeveloped, don't we have a bunch of artifacts found?
I worked in the archaeology lab from 95-97, cataloging many artifacts. I also recall voting at some point around 92 or 93 to raise student fees to renovate the USU, which started in 96/97 school year.
