San Jose State has a lot more history. Both are in major metros with good economic indicators, but not a lot of following.
SJSU following has lessened the last decade, right along with their lack of commitment to a stadium upgrade (which I still feel was a long term nail in the coffin for their football program, done intentionally, rather than build a 25k stadium that would be similar to the Earthquakes stadium in size and amenities).

If San Jose doesn't want to be in the BW, it looks like only Sac State is left in CA. I would have preferred Sac State over Bakersfield when Bake was added a few years ago. How long before UCSB and UCI look for greener pastures? UCSD and UC Davis have already looked elsewhere.

I'm currently excluding WCC schools from this exercise. When Gonzaga leaves, those CBS credits stay with the conference which short term might be enough to keep them together.
The only school I see that would help either with market size or eyeballs would be if SJSU drops football. They are a big market. But they are a minor player in a thin athletic department. And if you are cutting sports you aren't really selling your viability.
A California version of Wichita State who is respected and has performed well in the headliner sports would be attractive. There are none in California that fit this mold that come to mind.
D2 callups don't add anything. There isn't a D2 institution that is so committed to athletics and has a good following to justify it in today's age.

Now there's a mutually exclusive statement.

Are there any California schools that do not play football that have potential to make the Big West more visible.
